The Waldorf Astoria New York will close on Wednesday, as owner Anbang Insurance Group will convert part of the iconic midtown Manhattan hotel to luxury condominiums.

Reports peg the closure time for as long as three years.

Hilton changes loyalty programme

Hilton’s loyalty programme, which has 60 million members worldwide, announced changes today.

The changes include a rebranding – it is changing from Hilton HHonors to Hilton Honors, which will be a relief to the spellcheck, and also sees “Shop with Points at Amazon” being introduced. This will be welcome for many members with low numbers of points looking to get some use from their points.

Grab-and-go-dining at hotels started out as a way to send guests on their way with a good breakfast (and leave them with a positive last impression of the hotel). But the trend has grown in scope to encompass other meals and snacks through the entire day and night.

According to Jonathan Wilson, VP, product innovation and brand services for Hilton Worldwide, food-and-beverage is changing across the industry, shifting from full-service restaurants to grab-and-go throughout the day.

Hilton evaluating experiment with cancellation fee

Hilton Worldwide has completed a two-month trial in which a few of its hotels charged $50 for reservations canceled any time after they were booked.
The hotel company confirmed that its 60-day trial, which included 24 hotels, was conducted in November and December. Hilton declined to disclose further information about the trial, which was detailed in a New York Times report.
